opinion on US General Air Compressors

Looking at a US General brand air compressor. Thoughts? Any experience??
It's their 60 gallon model. The local Harbor Freight has them on sale
for $329.00 refurbished with a 2 year warranty.
The other option I was considering was a 60 gallon at Lowes - $450...but
I can't recall the brand name nor the warranty at the moment.

Re: opinion on US General Air Compressors

I've been wondering that myself.
Some of HFs stuff is actually pretty good, but it seems to depend on which Chinese plant they buy stuff from?

I have a spot that will not take a tall vertical such as the 60 gallon.
I was thinking of the little 29 gallon one they offer at HF, but I wonder if the cfm ratings are inflated, ha,ha, pun intended...

Re: opinion on US General Air Compressors

I vote you check the specifications of PSI at CFM to compare and make sure it can produce the proper pressure with the correct amount of flow of air. It gets frustrating waiting for the air compressor to fill up the tank as you are sandblasting, working with air tools, or just filling up tires. ;-)

Re: opinion on US General Air Compressors

I have found the HF compressors ok... as long as you break them in
correctly. And add oil for that matter... I have the little 21gal upright.
I have been eyeing the 60gal 220v upright for a long time.

Re: opinion on US General Air Compressors

as dave says, cfm ratings at specific psi levels are the true gauge.
if it's below 3 at 90 psi, run screaming.

Re: opinion on US General Air Compressors

wow.
thsoe are some crazy numbers. hopefully they're accurate.
a 220V 2-stage compressor is definitely the way to go if you can swing it.
you'll have no want for more air.... ever.
anything over 10cfm kicks.

sweeeeet!

Re: opinion on US General Air Compressors

They're just sitting in front of my Harbor Freight (under covered walkway) with the special prices marked. They are refurbished, but I figure with a 2 year warranty...and at that price...who the heck cares...

If you want me to get you one...I could...You'll just hafta come to raleigh to pick it up. :-)

I'm gonna go buy one today, and then figure out how to get it home.

Re: opinion on US General Air Compressors

I'd be all over one of those!
I'd have bought on the spot!

It'll go in the back of an XJ, push comes to shove :)
May dribble a little oil and you'd probably have to tie it in, but for that...

Just drain it all out and turn the compressor by hand to clear any oil before you fire it up if you do lay it down!

I'd do that on a refurb anyway as who knows if the oil was in it and it got sloshed around.

Re: opinion on US General Air Compressors

Belatedly...  Here's a thread regarding IR compressors which has a couple of mentions about the brand of compressor.  State that the units they saw were Made in the USA and had a good brand for a motor.
