My XJ is making a whining sound that changes pitch a little when the
steering wheel is turned. My mechanic thinks it's the wheel
bearings.Anyone know what this will entail to fix? Any help will be
appreciated. It's a '94 XJ 4.0 with Sport on the fenders,although it
doesn't have a tach or anything to distinguish it as a Sport model.

The XJs all had a front double bearing assembly that bolts on to the steering knuckle. Easy to change if you have a bearing puller. They come as an assembly and are not rebuild-able. If your fast, you can change them both in an hour easily. If not make it two.

Is this a 4 wheel drive or a 2 wheel drive?
Just checking!
Usually to help pinpoint which side is making the noise you turn in
the other direction to make it louder.
(Turn Left, Noise Louder = Right Front Wheel Bearing)
This usually works but sometimes it can mislead you OR both front
wheel bearings could be bad! <g>
Someone posted a real good write up to do them quick and easily.
Poster claimed he can do one in less than 30 minutes IIRC.
I usually take my time! lol
Oh and maybe inspecting or replacing the U-Joint might be a good idea too!
