i have a 94 xj with a 231j tcase the tcase locked up and i was wondering if i could fit and it would work to put a 208 in place of it. i can get a 231 but its under a stock xj and damn near impossible to get to and i can not get my hands behind well in front of it to get the bolts out.... hhheellpppp

Getting the xfer case off is a huge pain because of the connection to the transmission. Those nuts are in a tight place. I would suggest getting some shorty crescent wrenches to remove the 231. Getting it back on is just as much of a pain.
Upgrading of the transfer case is a great idea. It is stronger than the 231. You can even upgrade the gearing if needed.
The xfer case should bolt right on. The difficult part will be getting the linkage all set up correctly.
