I'm having two issues with the dash configuration in my 1998 sport.
First: Occasionally the dash just dies. All the gauges quit. However,
after kicking (literally) the bottom of the dash the whole thing comes
back to life again. I've read that this is a known problem in this jeep
and that the fix is to replace the plug that goes from the wiring
harness to the back of the dash. The dealer said I'd have to replace
the entire wiring harness (to the tune of $2000)to solve the issue.
That is if I can find one. Any ideas?
Second: Has anyone modified the dashboard to the Cherokee to accommodate
things like Ham radio gear? Extra switches? Etc? I'd love to see some
photos of modified center consoles.

I had the same problem. Just took the instrument panel out,
took some long nosed pliers and bent the male spades/pins a
little bit, plugged it back in, and put everything back
together. All pins were bend the same direction.
The trick is to bend the pins as much as possible, but not
so far as to not be guided into the female holes when plugging
it back in.
It has easily been over a year now and it is still fixed.

We use a pencil eraser to clean the contacts as well as bending them
slightly to make a tighter connection.
