Almost got to do my diesel conversion this weekend, but ran into a snag. After removing the V6 and replacing the bellhousing, I realized the input shaft on the transmission is shorter than the one currently in the car. Both the 2.1l Cherokee and the V6 and I4 Cherokees use the same transmission (AX5) so what is going on here, and does anybody possible have a longer input shaft?

car?
With some of the vehicles I work on, there are spacers between the
crankshaft and the flywheel/driveplate.
How much shorter is the input shaft?
Is that the correct bellhousing? Do you have a parts catalog that might
list any different parts needed for a particular engine and transmission?
Good luck with this!

Sorry.
Its a 1985 Jeep Cherokee Laredo
It is being converted from a 2.8 V6 with AX5 5 speed to a 2.1l Turbo Diesel (available in Jeeps from 1985-1987)
I have the bellhousing that came with the engine from a 1987 Jeep Cherokee Chief.
The Flywheel doesn't go far in enough to use spacers, and the clutch and clutch plate do not even get on the teeth of the input shaft, in order to be on the teeth they would have to be sitting deep in the bellhousing.

Just discovered something, there are three different part numbers for the AX5 input shaft, the 2.5, 2.8, and 2.1 all share the same transmission (Either BA/10 or AX5, more commonly AX5)
Since my Diesel engine is from a 1987, it uses the 2nd part number....but the AX5 in my jeep is from 1985 which is a different part number for that input shaft. Does anybody know if they changed the sizes for the input shaft over the years? That would explain the 3 different part numbers
