I have a couple of lens adapters that are shiny nickel plated; and in the
digital world it is not a good idea. How do I make the coating go dark? I
don't want to use paint because I don't want to deal with cleaning little
paint flakes off of my sensor later. Black magic marker is too shiny.

Sandblasting! or you could use a buffing wheel with some really aggressive
rouge.
