When do you hear/feel this clunking?
How are the door hinges?

doors are fine... i strongly suspect its the springs or shock absorbers.
its really hard to describe. at least for me.
ive been to my local mechanic 2 time already and we can figure it out.
im going to get a 2nd opinion and see if a fresh set of eyes and brains can work it out.

Could those clips around the rear leaf springs cause this problem if they
are missing?
When do you hear this clunk and can you pinpoint where it is coming from?

the clunks come when im running at about 40mph, and i run over some small repetitive bumps (like speed strips). it sounds like the rear axle is bouncing around if i didnt have shocks.
to me it really sounds like the left rear tire.
Offline
Definitely sounds like a bad shock.
Most likely loose or a broken bolt (uppers)
How old are your shocks and who installed them?
Offline
Lift that side of the Jeep and see if your wheel moves in and out of the
axle.
Make sure that it does not come off and pass you down the street.
Check the bumper and the rear hatch and the spare tire.
Just some thoughts!

Shocks are a good place to start. One you might not of thought of is the spring bushings. They can wear out also.
Offline
shocks are less than a year old. my mechanic installed them. but i just had a complete change of the bushings. so he may have loosened them or took them off for that.
Offline
yup... changed the bushings a few weeks ago. thats actually when i noticed the new sound.

hatch: check!
bumper: check!
spare: check!
axle: hmmmmm havent looked at that yet.
by check i mean that its verified as not the cause.
