Tilt steering column wobble issue

Does anyone in San Diego County have the knowledge, skills & tools to repair the steering column on a 1989 XJ? It's the fairly common GM column issue. There's some plastic plate partway down the steering column (I think only on those that have Tilt Wheel) that, being plastic, breaks or comes loose. I paid an Auto Electric shop $125 (ouch!) a few years back to fix one where the plate was loose but not yet broken.

I've not yet added "Pulling the steering wheel & pulling the column apart" to the list of things I've done to a vehicle, so I'd like to (a) save money, (b) fix the problem, and (c) LEARN.

Re: Tilt steering column wobble issue

I talked to Roger. He's done a million of them. 1. He said a auto electric shop had no business working on the column. 2. He said maybe the bolts just need to be tightened. 3. If it needs to be torn apart, it's anywhere from not cheep to expensive. 4. It may be better to get a used one instead of fixing the old one. 5. He IS a honest and smart man that stands behind what he does, and does it right! 5. Tell him Uncle Greg sent you. He's the one that started that. But I like him anyway. But I'll answer to a$$hole Greg too. So Unc G aint to bad 8)

Re: Tilt steering column wobble issue

I've done it on mine a couple times (forgot the locktite the first time.  D'oh!).  Just involves tearing apart the column and tightening a few torx bolts.  It's one of those things that if you have the right tools and have done it before you can do it in 45 minutes.  If not it'll take forever.

Swing on out to Phoenix and I'll do it for ya. :-)

Re: Tilt steering column wobble issue

I've tightened mine a couple of times and it just gets loose again. I think I need to replace the column. I probably won't do it until the damn thing falls out though. I can't imagine anything else on the XJ that's more of a bitch to replace.

Re: Tilt steering column wobble issue

Getting down to the three torx bolts isn't that big of a job. But replacing the whole column makes me sick just thinking about it. I've never done it but it looks like everything under the dash has to come apart to get at the column. If I had time I would consider it. But I think I'll wait until it falls off first.
