On my 98 the temperature gauge in the dash is reading incorrectly as it is showing my temps to be more like 160 during the summer heat. Now it seems that my model of XJ has only one sensor that is tapped into the thermostat housing. I hate to just go and replace it without doing a little more effort. I am wondering if anyone has run into a chart of resistance values to test my current sensor with a multimeter. If I could, then I could know more certainly if dropping the coin on the sensor is necessary or not.
I have flipped through my FSM fairly extensively and can't say I have seen such a chart. While googling I did run into one for older early 90 models, but I don't know how likely it is that the values should be identical.
Any feedback is appreciated.

For $30, I think I would replace it if its original.

It is original. And if there was a chart handy, I could run it through a test rather quickly. For grins I might just try the old chart I found. Assuming I can locate it again!
I am pretty sure it is just the sensor dying, but you never know. I would hate to throw the money at it without a bit of effort beforehand, especially for something this easy to test.

Here's what I found before....

Here are some of the numbers from the table in the 97 FSM.
68F => 11,370-13,610 ohms
77F => 9120-10880 ohms
86F => 7370-8750 ohms
194F => 830-970 ohms
248F => 370-410 ohms

Fuel System Section 14, Page 42. The older Renix had a different sensor.

Sure enough! Oh well, glad you knew of it as that saves me any further time wasting.
Now if the heat outside will subside enough to get me interested in going outdoors....
