Re: Can't accelerate past 55 mph

Today I was driving to work in my 89 jeep cherokee 4.0 2wd. I had a
hard time getting it up to and past 55 MPH. It just kept booging down
or sputtering. If I gradullay gave it gas I could get it up to 65 MHP.
Does anyone have an Idea whats wrong. I also have a hard time from a
stand still taking off but if if shift my automatic tran manually it
takes off normal. This has been ongoing for months. I do have 158,000
miles on car.

Change the fuel filter. It sounds like it isn't getting enough fuel.

Re: Can't accelerate past 55 mph

I wonder if the catalytic converter is plugged up?  That would certainly make it difficult to accelerate.  Quick checks - look at it after driving a few miles at night to see if it glows red, also - does it smell really strong, check also the exhaust temperature at the end of the pipe, you should be able to hold your hand in the exhaust flow without discomfort.  One other check, does it rev freely in neutral from idle or does it seem to take a while to wind up the revs?

158,000 on original Cat may be asking too much (assuming it is the original).

Re: Can't accelerate past 55 mph

As for the sputtering sounds like you need either a fuel preasure regulator (on the end of the fuel rail), MAP sensor (on the firewall) or a new fuel pump. Hope this helps.
