Re: How Hot Does Your Cherokee Run?

Hi all,

I have a cherokee 4.0 Auto which seems to run (in my opinion ) hotter
than it should. Just looking to get and idea what other peoples
temperature gauge sits at when the cars warmed up and if anyone knows
any common faults that make them run hot?

Re: How Hot Does Your Cherokee Run?

The design of the radiator and size and airflow of he fans makes them run warm.

Re: How Hot Does Your Cherokee Run?

My 1989 has always run mid guage: 220. MY mechanic says this is normal for the engine, esp the age of engine.

Re: How Hot Does Your Cherokee Run?

They do seem to run about 220. I have a 2000 which I replaced the radiator on recently and both before and after it was at 220.

Re: How Hot Does Your Cherokee Run?

Mine ran in the middle of the gauge for about 4 years, till some
problems recently. After replacing the radiator, fan clutch, and
thermostat (with a standard one from the Jeep dealership), it now runs
at about 1/4 of the way below the center (towards cold - about 190 deg?).

It would get just above the center while crawling along in 4-LO on the
trails at Camp Jeep two weeks ago, and then the electric fan would kick
on and bring it back down.

Re: How Hot Does Your Cherokee Run?

My temperature gauge sits steady at 195 deg, but when I lift the hood,
it seems alot hotter than anything I've ever owned.
The current theory is the header has a crack and heating up the
engine compartment. checking it out is "on my list".

Re: How Hot Does Your Cherokee Run?

sits in the middle of the gauge, (100Celcius, 220F) leaning a bit
towards the left during city driving.
sits more towards the left, almost at the quarter mark when running at
50-60 mph.
sits in the middle leaning towards the right when climbing hills.

my mechanic has modified my electric fan so that when im going to the
mountains i can by pass the thermostat so that the electric fan is
always on at full speed and not dependent on the engine RPM.

Re: How Hot Does Your Cherokee Run?

Mine was recently running way too hot until I found a working 195F
thermostat. Old one and new Premium Stant were defective causing
overheating, but cheapie Stant is working correctly.
It runs cool like Stephens maybe 195F, between 2nd notch(160F?) to
3rd notch (210F).
It used to run closer to 210-220 until I replaced the radiator which
made a tremendous improvement in keeping it normally "cool".
Remember gauges and sending units can create different readings!
Location and elevation are factors too! <!-- s;-) --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_e_wink.gif" alt=";-)" title="Wink" /><!-- s;-) -->

Re: How Hot Does Your Cherokee Run?

Not only is mine running hot, but my alternator's "pooping" the bed. I
think everyone knows what choice word I avoided. My temp gauge is
usually pointing straight up but if I'm at a light, I've seen it go
3/4 up. I'm losing some performance due-to my alternator. It's usually
sitting just a hair below the 14v mark. If I run my fan, headlights,
rear defrost and CD player, it'll go down quite abit and I notice a
loss of power.

Another issue I have is that my air filter has oil on it. PCV valve is
the cause of that from what others at the shop I work at say. Have you
done a thorough check on yours? How's your air filter and alternator?

The only main problem I've heard about any Jeep vehicle is the front
ends go bad. Mine's fine. If you can, try jacking your front end up
one tire at a time by the axl. Once your tire is off the ground, shake
the tire left & right to test the tie rod ends. Then, grab the tire
from top to bottom and shake to test ball joints. You are trying to
feel if there's no play or if it feels like something's not connected.
If you feel it's loose both times you shake the tire, it would
possibly be a wheel bearing.
