Just bought an 01 XJ with 160k miles two weeks ago. My 4hi doesn’t engage.
2hi, neutral and 4Lo work fine.
The linkage is working and when I put it into position I can hear quiet clicks from the gearbox but revving the engine and putting the transmission through it’s gears does nothing.
Is my T case junk or what can I do?

Sometimes the linkage for the transfer case isn't as spot on as it should be and requires some adjustment. Most guys actually replace the linkage with something a little more beefy and accurate so they don't have shifting issues. You may just not be fully engaged to 4 low. Try fiddling with the location of the shifter to see if you can get it into gear. If that is the problem you can adjust the linkage.

4 hi is the issue.
I’ve tried wiggling and moving it around all the way between 2 and neutral and it doesn’t engage.

How do you know you aren't in 4 hi?

When I put it into position it won’t move. Like it’s in neutral.
I’ve tried it from neutral and in drive while rolling as the owners manual says.
So today I put it on jack stands and went through all the gears and watched the tires spin. When in 4h position none move. Put it back in 2 and the rear moves. Put it in 4Lo and they all four move. Nothing but quiet clicking in 4hi.

It may be that it needs to move barely further towards 4low to engage. Try moving it somewhere between 4high and 4low

I have. I’ve moved it slowly between 2 and 4lo both in drive and in neutral. 4 hi never engages.
It’s weird.

Sounds like something is not right inside the transfer case. Is everything stock or has stuff been upgraded/modified?

Stock as far as I know and can tell.
I was hoping this was an issue that happens on occasion that most are farmiliar with fixing.

Well the fluid was full but I changed it anyway. No change.
Disconnected the linkage and moved the lever on the case by hand. Still no engagement of the front shaft.
I’d see rebuild kits run about $150 and a new case is about twice that.
Should I rebuild or replace?

I would suggest opening it up and looking for broken or missing parts. Could be as simple as some shift fork pads being missing which you can buy for 20 bucks. You never know until you open it up. I would look at an exploded view of your transfer case which I believe is an np231. Google it an it should come right up. To be sure there is a circular badge that has the model on it right on the outside of the case.
