1999 XJ clunks/lurches when put into any forward gear from standstill

1999 XJ 4x4, 98K, never offroad, clunks/lurches when put into any

FORWARD gear when standing still, but NEVER clunks/lurches when put

into reverse, and otherwise transmission functions smoothly and

flawlessly.

Jeep Master Mechanic said that because it does not do it going into

reverse that it must be transmission-related, but had transmission

completely rebuilt and it still does it. Hard to believe that it could be slip

yoke, mounts, u-joints, etc. because those problems seem to have other

symptoms that this vehicle doesn't have. Hoping to find someone else that

has had this specific (uni-directional) problem and was able to figure out

what was causing it.

Details:

Just got my XJ back from the transmission shop. It was in there for over 2

months, during which he completely rebuilt the transmission and the torque

converter, replaced the valve body and the transmission control module

and even the transmission case, and at the end he said that he and all of

his fellow transmission shop owners on a network were all completely

stumped as to why none of that fixed the problem. He did not charge me

for any of this, because he said that he does not charge if he can't fix the

problem. He was still pretty much 100% sure that the transmission would

be the problem, but at that point he said the only thing that I could do

would be to actually replace the entire transmission with a rebuilt one, and

hope that somehow doing that would solve the problem.

So... It seems that one of these things has to be true:

1.) All of these Transmission Specialists plus a certified Jeep Master

Mechanic are all completely wrong, and the problem is not related to the

transmission at all, and my transmission mechanic invested over 2 months

of time plus the parts and labor required to rebuild the transmission and

torque converter etc. based upon a wrong assumption that the

transmission was the problem.

OR

2.) Somehow my transmission has such a rare and freakish problem that it

was able to avoid being fixed despite the transmission almost being

completely replaced.

Re: 1999 XJ clunks/lurches when put into any forward gear from standstill

This is actually a common problem with these XJ's. Many have noticed it and felt it wasn't detrimental to the drivetrain. Some have suggested going to neutral first before going into drive to remove the lurch. I have also read that it could be a loose u-joint or something loose closer to the axle causing it.
You should check the play in ujoints and axle and see if they are overly loose.

Yes...I also have heard multiple explanations, everything from "it's normal" to it has to be the transmission because it it only does it going from Neutral to Drive and NOT from Neutral to Reverse. The veteran Master Jeep Technician got under the vehicle and grabbed the drive shaft while his assistant put the XJ into Drive, and concluded that it had to be the transmission. But after a complete transmission rebuild, including the torque coverter and even replacing the transmission case (!), this XJ has stumped not only the veteran transmission shop owner, but all of his network of transmission specialist friends, as well. To his credit, after having the Jeep inside of his shop taking up space there for 9 weeks straight, he refused to charge me anything for the rebuild because he said that he doesn't charge anyone when he can't resolve the problem.

I just watched the above video (not a Jeep), which offers one possible explanation as to how a clunk/lurch could occur unidirectionally. GRAVITY only works in one direction, and if part of the drive train stucture has up and down play in it, that would explain how the clunk/lurch could be unidirectional, because gravity can serve to remove play unidirectionally when in Neutral gear. His differential support bracket was being lifted up when in Drive, then it would fall back down to normal position when in Neutral, leaving no play to cause a clunk/lurch when put into Reverse. I don't know yet if there is anything under my XJ that would be subject to this unidirectional play, but other than the transmission itself, this seems like the most likely reason for the unidirectional clunk/lurch.

Re: 1999 XJ clunks/lurches when put into any forward gear from standstill

Have you checked your leaf springs to make sure there isn't any play in the u-bolts or even where they attach to the unibody?

Actually I just thought of a great test. If you can remove the rear drive shaft and put it into 4-high and try putting into drive. That will at least tell you if it is somewhere in the transmission or the rear drivetrain. If you still get the clunk it is somewhere in the transmission/transfer-case. If there is no clunk it will likely be in the rear drivetrain.

Here are two videos of my differential while being shifted mostly back and forth from Reverse to Drive with an ~4 second pause in Neutral each time. First video is with TC in 2H, second video is with TC in 4L:

Videos:

'99 Jeep Cherokee XJ differential play (TC & Trans in Neutral for manual test). Much less visible play when doing manually - when not using engine power and sudden transmission engagement into Drive to jerk the drive shaft around:
