Transfer Case/Lifters

Ive got the NP242 under my 91.  When i left off the throttle i get a bit of a shudder and its like it's trying to drop out of the truck.  Had a shop look at it and they want 1,000$ to rebuild it.  Ive priced them online for less.  My question is should i go with a reman or will a simple rebuild suffice, and whats a good way, shy of yankin' the head, to eradicate tis dogon' lifter tic

Re: Transfer Case/Lifters

You could find an np242 at the junkyard. Plenty out there. You could easily find something functional for cheap.
Transfer cases are just about the easiest things to work on if you just wanted to rebuild it yourself.

Re: Transfer Case/Lifters

I plan on rebuilding a JY case. Just need the time to go get one. Any idea where I could get a factory repair manual? Digital preferably

Re: Transfer Case/Lifters

Is there any specs I need to be aware of to get one from a ZJ? I know mine is a 23 spline but I'm not sure if they are direct swaps or not

Re: Transfer Case/Lifters

You will likely have trouble with using a ZJ 242. It will most likely have a different spline count and a different input gear.

Re: Transfer Case/Lifters

10/4 The lift/knock, it's hard to decipher, is concerning me. I pulled the VC Saturday and the only rocker with any play was the rear on #6. I'm wondering if it's a bent rod or a sticky lifter. It has about 1/16-1/8" of play and I've run some of the bottle cure stuff through it. It got louder on me. It quiets down after a long drive but always returns to the louder volume the next day

Re: Transfer Case/Lifters

So I'm at the JY and there is one XJ 4x on the whole lot. It's a 99, and I'm wondering if the Tcase is compatible with my 91. I plan to rebuild the case before installation but I don't want to waste the money on rebuilding the wrong part.

Re: Transfer Case/Lifters

Look at the circular badge on the rear side of the Tcase. It will tell you if it is a np242 or a np231.
