window noise

How does the power window mechanism know when to stop at the top? The reason I ask is that my driver's side has started making a horrible banging noise when it gets all the way closed that only stops when I release the button. It wont stop on it's own anymore and it sounds like the motor is going to strip some teeth or something. I don't know how it is supposed to shut off so I can't diagnose it or know what to replace. maybe it just needs adjusting. I did find a broken spring in the bottom of the door cavity but that may be a red herring.

Re: window noise

The motors operate a long spring that acts as a flexible screw.  The only way the motor knows to quit is when you let up off the switch.  They just go until they can't go any more.  You will notice this if you depress the switch and look at your voltage meter.  The windows will stop but  the voltage will still be a half volt low until you let go of he switch.  It sound like the mechanism is just getting worn.  There is no adjustment.
They are replaceable though.  They are riveted in with 1/4" aluminum rivets.  Just drill them out and use 1/4" allen head screws and nilock nuts in their place.  Some of the rivets may not be tight and cause the door to have a slight rattle.  replace them all if you want to fix this.

Re: window noise

So basically it's getting worn and slipping and that's causing the noise?

So what do I replace? I traced the long spring up to the point where it attaches to the window and there seems to be a gear arrangement at that point that may be attached with rivets. However, it seems that my noise is coming form the motor end though the door is a huge resonator so it may be difficult to tell. I placed my hand over both ends of the spring while operating the window and I can feel it more at the motor end.

Can I get these parts from the dealer or else where?

Re: window noise

What is slipping is the equivalent of a plastic nut over the spring (screw).  I don't know if the dealer still has the parts or not.  Some they don't carry anymore.  But I think that you will have to purchase the whole mechanism.
