Horrible squealing

hi all, when I startup my 2000 Cherokee (4.0L), it often makes a horrible squealing noise when I pull away, then goes away after 5-10 seconds.

I've sprayed the serpentine belt liberally with belt dressing, it seems to be tensioned properly (by feel). Sprayed several times now and no difference. Is there any other parts that commonly cause this noise?

The belt has a few cracks in it - are worn belts normally noisy?

I could try replacing the belt, but seems like a drastic step...

When did replacing a belt become drastic?

Re: Horrible squealing

If your belt still makes noise after the dressing and checking the tension it probably is the tensioner pulley or some other item such as the alternator or water pump that may be hard to turn which will cause the belt to slip on that pulley thus causing the noise.

I would suggest to take the belt off and try turning each of the pulley's that the belt travels on to see which one is very hard to turn.
