2000 xj motor swap

Just picked up a 2001 xj.  Needs a block. I have a 1996 grand Cherokee. Are the blocks compatable. (stoke and compression)

Careful with Wrangler and Grand 4.0's, at some point the waterpump changed from four bolts to five, with the outlet pointing a different direction.  Thus they will not work well in xj's.  I don't know what year that happened.  You can tell on tj's by the location of the ac compressor being drivers side low.

Having successfully swapped an 02 Grand Cherokee 4.0 to a 99 xj, you may have some issues, the accessory brackets are not the same, motor mounts are different, all the cast bosses for bolts to the engine block are present, BUT, The ones you need aren't drilled and tapped, also, the cast brackets for the ac and alternator and the timing cover are different, the cast parts on the block can be modified and drilled and tapped where needed, and the xj timing cover can be used. The coil on plug setup is similar, as are the sensors, I had some problems with the injectors and connectors (but the previous owner had buggered them a bit anyway) Be prepared for cutting, grinding, drilling and tapping if you do it, measure 10x and cut very carefully! Also "Brown Dog" makes conversion motor mount brackets for  the GC 4.0 to mount into an XJ

I swapped a '99 Wrangler 4.0 into my '00 XJ.  All the accessories swapped over fine, but the exhaust ports are a pain, the '00 (331 head) has raised ports and it's exhaust manifold has issues with the old style ports.  It can be made to work, but it takes a bit.  My '00 is a CT car, but has the Cali emissions package with the 3 cats, 2 at the exhaust manifold, then the regular one.  I hear that makes a difference as the "49" state cars are supposed to be easier.
