New Jeep owner

Howdy. I just bought my first Jeep and this looked liked a good place to join. She's a '95 Cherokee with the 4.0, auto, and part time 4wd. Been a good runner so far. My only gripe is the dash. Idiot lights and no tach. What was Jeep thinking? But to the point. Could I buy a used gauge cluster with the tach and use it? Or would it be simpler just to leave the stock cluster in and install aftermarket gauges. Not having a real oil pressure and temp gauge makes me nervous. Thanks for any help you can give.

Re: New Jeep owner

Good question, but I think I have the answer.  You can get a gauge cluster and it will bolt right in.  but I suggest you go to a pick and pull and get it yourself.  The reason being, that you will need to compare the plug on the back where the wiring harness plugs in and see if the wires go to the same place on the plug.  They probably do, however because Jeep tends to be conservative on its tooling and would use the same wiring harness for both applications.  If it is, the only thing you will need is the sending units for oil and coolant temp which will change out easily.

i've also heard that with those two sensors it's a straight swap, ecms and harnesses all the same. i plan on doing it on my '94.

Re: New Jeep owner

You can get a cluster with the "real" gauges from any XJ of the same model year range from
your local junkyard; I assume 91-96 is the correct range for you. When you swap over the cluster you will also have to swap over those sensors as well, but they also "plug right in". I believe the only sensors you'll have to swap are the temp sensor & the oil sending unit sensor.

Someone correct me if I am wrong on that.
